Which guide to choose?
Recommended Tour Operators
Local Guides: A community of local guides, with the best reviews on both Google and Tripadvisor because of their sincere eco-friendly approach. While all agencies in Bukit Lawang claim to be eco-friendly, Local Guides is the only one that doesn’t offer tours to the Tangkahan Elephant Camp because of environmental concerns, and the only one that has (in-house trained) female guides. Since they’re local, you can get a private jungle tour for the same price as a shared jungle tour elsewhere.
Sumatra Orangutan Explore: A German tour operator focussing on large group tours and offering various trekking options. They work with large online corporations such TripAdvisor and Booking and are the largest tour operator in Bukit Lawang.
Bukit Lawang Jungle Trekking: A German tour operator known for their knowledgeable guides and commitment to eco-friendly practices. They offer a range of tours from half-day trips to multi-day treks.
Sumatra EcoTravel: A German tour operator recommended for their sustainability efforts and excellent service. They offer comprehensive packages that include accommodation and various activities.
Criteria
Choosing the right tour operator in Bukit Lawang is essential to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and informative experience. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision.
Reputation and Reviews: Look for operators with positive reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor, Google, and travel forums. Pay attention to feedback about the guides’ knowledge, safety standards, and overall experience. Also check to what extent the reviews are genuine and provide concrete details, in order to identify fake reviews (both positive and negative reviews can be fake).
Sustainability and Ethical Practices: Opt for tour operators committed to sustainable and ethical practices. Ensure they adhere to guidelines for responsible wildlife interactions and conservation efforts, particularly regarding orangutan tours. This includes not providing food to wildlife (which some organisations do to help customers with a nice TikTok picture), don’t leaving trash in the jungle, and ideally, engaging local communities in their business.
Certified Guides: Ensure the operator employs certified and experienced guides. Qualified guides enhance the experience by providing valuable insights into the flora and fauna of the region. They should be a member of the Bukit Lawang HPI Guide association.
Range of Services: Check if the operator offers various tour options that suit your interests and schedule. This can include jungle treks of different durations, river tubing, and village tours.
Private vs Shared Tours: Unless you are a solo traveler, private tours are highly recommended since they offer a more personalized experience in terms of trek difficulty, length, dietary requirements or special wildlife interests.
Inclusions and Costs: Compare what’s included in the tour price, such as meals, accommodation, equipment, and transportation. Ensure there are no hidden costs and that the pricing is transparent.
Safety Measures: Inquire about the safety measures in place, including emergency protocols, guide-to-tourist ratios, and equipment quality.
Local Knowledge: Operators with deep local knowledge can provide a richer experience, highlighting cultural and historical aspects of Bukit Lawang.
Additional Tips
Prepare for your: On the website of Local Guides you can find valuable information about Sumatra orangutans and jungle treks, ranging from when to go, how to reach Bukit Lawang, what to bring, what to expect and – most importantly – what it costs.
Book in Advance: Popular operators can get fully booked, especially during peak seasons. Booking in advance ensures you get your preferred dates and services.
Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask the tour operator about their practices, guide qualifications, and what to expect during the tour.
Respect Nature: Remember to follow guidelines to minimize your impact on the environment and wildlife.
If you’re a female traveler… consider doing the jungle trek with a female guide. While Bukit Lawang is generally safe, there have been incidences where solo female travelers felt psychologically unsafe around their male staff at night in the jungle. Currently, only Local Guides has female guides.
